Carina Witthöft was born Hamburg, Germany on February 16th, 1995. She started playing tennis at a very young age as both of her parents are tennis coaches, but she considers her first real tennis lessons to have started at age 5.
Her father and mother own two different tennis clubs in Hamburg. Carina Witthöft trains at one of the clubs with her coach Phillip Lang throughout the year and her mother accompanies her to her matches. She also has a sister that plays tennis as well. Her style is very aggressive and she prefers to utilize a fast and calculated serve to set up points.
Tennis Career
Carina Witthöft began her professional career extremely early, playing her first ITF Circuit events in her home country of Germany in 2009 when she was just 13 years old. Despite not winning any ITF Circuit titles in her debut year, Carina Witthöft showed promise. In 2010, she was able to play her first WTA tournament qualifying event in Stuttgart though she lost her qualifying match.
In 2011, she tried to qualify for WTA matches again but she fell twice during qualifying matches. 2011 was also the year that Carina Witthöft was able to secure her first singles title on the ITF circuit when she defeated Venessa Henske at the Zell am Harmersbach in April.
As she continued her professional tennis career, she eventually was able to capture 10 more ITF singles titles as well as a doubles title with her partner Alize Lim. Her WTA tour premiere was during the 2012 Swedish Open.
Carina Witthöft broke into the top 50 after her performance at Wimbledon 2015 despite losing to Angelique Kerber in the opening round. Carina Witthöft made her career high ranking of number 49 in the world on August 15th, 2015 after competing in the 2015 Canadian Open where she defeated Coco Vandeweghe from the United States as well as Alison Riske, another American. She lost in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open of 2015 against Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine.
Playing Style
Carina Witthöft is a right-handed two-handed backhand player that utilizes a lot of power, angles, and depth in her play. When spectators see Carina Witthöft play it becomes easy to see that she has modeled her playing style after one of her favorite tennis players, Maria Sharapova.
