Olga Govortsova is a professional female tennis player from Belarus. Born in 1988, Olga Govortsova has found success in both the ITF Circuit as well as WTA tournaments. Throughout her career, she has managed to capture 5 different ITF titles and while she has not been able to win any WTA tournaments, she reached the 2008 Cellular South Open against Lindsay Davenport. Consistently ranked in the top 100, Olga Govortsova has a career high ranking of number 38 in the world.
Personal Life
Olga Govortsova was born on August 23rd, 1988 in Pinsk, Belarus. Her parents are Alexei and Tatiana Govortsova and were the ones who introduced her to tennis when she was 6 years old. She also has 2 brothers, Ilya and Alexander. She has a two-handed backhand which is one of her most preferred shots and has led to her success in many matches. She trains with her coach Vladimir Kruk and has stated in the past that the two female tennis players that she looks up to most are Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport.
Tennis Career
Olga Govortsova began playing on the ITF Circuit as a professional in 2002. Her first match was played in her home country of Belarus. In 2003, she won her first doubles title on the ITF circuit with her partner. Her first WTA qualifier was in 2004 at Tashkent. She had a WTA main draw event during 2006 in the same city but she was defeated in the first round.
2007 marked her first season to reach the top 50 and she was able to make the semifinals in Tashkent. That same year she was able to reach the 2nd round of both the US Open as well as Wimbledon. By July 2007, she managed to enter the rankings at number 100 and by the end of the year, she became the number 50 ranked player in the world after winning two singles titles.
2008 was her biggest year when she was able to reach her career high rank of 35. 2008 is the year that Olga Govortsova lost to one of her tennis idols, Lindsay Davenport, in a WTA tour final.
In 2009, she lost her main draw entry against Amelie Mauresmo at the Australian Open. Later that year she beat the highest ranked female British player at the time, Anne Keothavong, at Indian Wells. In 2010, she had a slump at the beginning of the year but was able to make it to the finals of the MPS Group Championships finals. She lost the finals against Caroline Wozniacki, once again leaving her just short of her first WTA title.
In 2015, she made it to the 4th round of a Grand Slam event when she participated at Wimbledon and defeated Alize Cornet and Rybarikova.
In doubles, Olga Govortsova has 8 title wins as well as 5 finals. Partners she has won doubles titles with include Jans-Ignacik, Kudryavtseva, Chuang, Craybas, and Poutchek.
Playing Style
Olga Govortsova is a right-handed player that utilizes a two-handed backhand. Her backhand is her favorite shot and she is able to generate a lot of power with it from distance and the baseline. Despite performing well on all types of surfaces, her preferred surface is actually clay, which is able to use to her advantage to really dig into the surface and generate a lot of power in her shots.
